Our Philosophy

Chinese medicine understands each of us as a microcosm of the universe — the heart our sun, the lungs our sky, digestion our soil, the liver our impulse toward growth, movement, and new beginnings, the kidneys our salty oceans. This relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm is at the heart of Chinese medicine, shaping a medical tradition that has spent more than two thousand years understanding health in relationship to the larger rhythms of life — the changing seasons, the weather, and the complex ecology of our own bodies.

It is a complete medical system, and we draw on all of it — acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, moxibustion, cupping, and bodywork — choosing what is appropriate for the person in front of us rather than simply treating the name of a condition.

We treat both the branch and the root: the symptom that brought you in, and the underlying patterns that may be contributing to it. This is why patients often find that things they had stopped mentioning have quietly improved as well.

We have been practicing this way in New York since 1999, and we would be glad to see you.

Finding us

We’re located at 37 East 28th Street, in NoMad — two blocks above Madison Square Park, a few short steps from the 28th Street stop on the 6, step-free from the sidewalk to the elevator. Come up to the fifth floor—suite 500—and ring the bell.

The clinic reception

The space

Michael Morris of Morris Sato Studio designed the practice with quiet, tranquility, and escape foremost in mind. Specially commissioned soundproofed glass in the windows keeps the city outside where it belongs.

Framed brush calligraphy in black ink on white paper — three large characters with the artist's red seal — hung on a cream wall above the back of a bench.

What you'll find

We have four treatment rooms, each soundproofed in turn, so that nothing carries: not the corridor, not the room next door, not what is said in yours. Table warmers, heat lamps, and music of your choosing are available should you want them. Tea and coffee are complementary (of course). HEPA air filtration assures a healthful environment while you relax on the table.

Personalized aesthetics throughout the space

A selection of artworks by emerging local artists and antique Ukiyo-e prints can be found in each treatment room. Chosen by us, not consultants or designers

Knowledge, experience, care, and compassion

These qualities and principles are at the heart of what we do. This is why a generation of New Yorkers have trusted us with their single most important asset: their health.
