The body has a remarkable capacity to heal. What healing does not always mean, however, is a complete return to the way the body moved and felt before.

Long after an injury or operation has resolved — sometimes years later, sometimes decades — the tissues involved may continue to behave differently. A scar is not simply a mark on the skin. The process that creates it changes the organization of collagen, the mobility of the tissue layers beneath it, local nerve signaling, and the way skin, fascia, and muscle move against one another. The wound may be completely healed and yet the area can remain tight, numb, unusually sensitive, restricted, or simply different from everything around it.

The effects are not always confined to the scar itself. When one area stops moving freely, the body finds another way to perform the same movement. A hip works harder because a knee does not fully extend; the lower back takes over for an abdominal wall that has remained guarded since surgery; a shoulder that healed successfully still changes the way the neck and upper back move. Over time, the compensation can become as significant as the original restriction.

Very little attention is routinely given to this stage of recovery. The incision closes, the follow-up appointments end — and whatever tightness, altered sensation, or limitation remains is often assumed to be something the patient simply has to live with.

It does not have to be this way.

What the treatment is

Scar & Microcurrent Therapy is a sixty-minute treatment designed specifically for scars and areas of persistent restriction following surgery, injury, or trauma.

The treatment centers on Dolphin microcurrent therapy, a very low-level electrical stimulation applied across and around the scar and, when appropriate, to related areas of restriction. Treatment is individualized according to the location and history of the scar, changes in sensation or mobility, and any broader patterns that may have developed around it.

What we treat

Scar therapy may be appropriate for scars following:

  • Abdominal or pelvic surgery
  • Cesarean delivery
  • Joint replacement
  • Knee and ACL surgery
  • Rotator cuff and other shoulder surgery
  • Laparoscopic procedures
  • Accidents and traumatic injuries
  • Other surgical procedures
  • Keloid and hypertrophic scars

Treatment may be particularly useful when a healed scar remains tight, tender, numb, unusually sensitive, or restricted, or when the area simply has never felt quite the same since the injury or operation.

Old scars can also be treated. A scar that has been present for years or even decades may still be relevant when the surrounding tissues remain restricted, sensitive, or connected to an ongoing pattern of compensation.

Not all scars are visible

Scar tissue and restriction can also develop after an injury that never broke the skin. A fracture, significant sprain, or other trauma can alter the tissues beneath the surface even when there is no surgical incision or visible scar.

These old injuries can sometimes remain surprisingly relevant. An area that healed decades ago may still have less mobility, a persistent dull ache, altered sensation, or restrictions that affect how the surrounding joints and muscles move. In these cases, microcurrent treatment can be applied to the area of the old injury even though there is no scar to see on the surface.

What happens during a session

We begin by looking at the scar itself and talking about the surgery or injury that caused it, how it healed, what you currently notice in the area, and whether anything changed in the way you move or feel afterward.

Microcurrent is then applied systematically across and around the scar. Treatment may also extend beyond the visible scar when there are related areas of restriction or compensation.

The restriction is not always where the pain is.

A surgical incision may be small while the tissues affected by the procedure extend considerably farther beneath it. The body may also have developed patterns of guarding or compensation during recovery that remain long after the incision itself has healed. For this reason, we treat the scar in the context of the surrounding area rather than simply tracing the visible line on the skin.

Most people feel very little from the microcurrent itself. The current is measured in millionths of an ampere and is very different from TENS or conventional electrical muscle stimulation. It is not intended to produce a strong sensation or forceful muscle contraction, and there is no downtime following treatment.

How scar therapy works

A mature scar is healed tissue, but it is not identical to the tissue that was there before. Collagen has been reorganized, tissue layers may glide differently, small sensory nerves may have been affected, and the surrounding tissues may have adapted to protect the area. Scar therapy is not about “breaking up” healed tissue, but about improving mobility in and around the scar and addressing restriction or altered sensation that may remain.

The nervous system is part of this picture as well. Guarding is a normal response after injury or surgery, but sometimes that protective pattern persists after it is no longer needed, contributing to stiffness, sensitivity, muscular tension, and changes in movement.

Microcurrent provides very gentle electrical stimulation to the scar and surrounding tissues. Unlike TENS or conventional electrical muscle stimulation, it uses current measured in millionths of an ampere and is not intended to produce a strong sensation or muscle contraction. Research has examined how low-level electrical stimulation may influence cellular activity and tissue repair. In treatment, we are interested in the practical changes: whether the scar moves more freely, pulling or tenderness diminishes, sensation changes, or movement becomes easier.

When a scar has an emotional history

Not every scar carries an emotional component, but some scars are associated with a difficult surgery, accident, traumatic injury, or another experience that was frightening or emotionally significant.

Occasionally, working with such an area brings up an unexpected emotional response. We do not assume that this will happen or assign a particular meaning to it. If it does, we can simply slow down and allow the treatment to proceed at a pace that feels comfortable.

Booking and practicalities

Scar & Microcurrent Therapy is a stand-alone sixty-minute appointment, though it can be added to an acupuncture session as an optional 30-minute add-on.

Recent surgical scars must be fully closed and healing normally before we work directly over them. We do not treat open wounds or areas that are infected, draining, or actively inflamed. If your surgery was very recent, we may ask you to obtain clearance from your surgeon before beginning treatment.

Dolphin microcurrent therapy is not performed during pregnancy or in patients with an implanted cardiac pacemaker.
